Defender D250 & D350

The D250 and D350 are 3.0-litre straight-six mild-hybrid diesels and the engines most commonly found in the new Defender Hard Top. The real choice is how much performance you want.

What it is

Both engines use Land Rover’s 3.0-litre inline-six diesel, a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and an eight-speed automatic gearbox driving all four wheels. The D250 produces 249hp, while the D350 produces 350hp.

The straight-six layout is inherently well balanced, helping both versions feel smoother and more refined than their commercial-vehicle role might suggest.

Why diesel, in 2026

A Defender Hard Top is a heavy working vehicle that may be loaded, towing and covering long distances. Diesel torque suits that job, while the mild-hybrid system helps low-speed response and refinement.

Petrol and electrified passenger Defenders offer alternatives for different patterns of use, but the D250 and D350 remain the natural choices for most Hard Top buyers.

What the mild hybrid actually does

It is not a hybrid in the sense of driving the car on electricity. A 48-volt belt-driven starter-generator recovers energy under braking and uses it to assist the engine at low revs and to run a smoother stop-start. The benefit is drivability and a small efficiency gain, not electric running.

Do I need a D350?

The D350 has roughly 100hp more than the D250. You can feel the difference, especially when accelerating with weight on board, but most buyers choose the D250 and find it has ample performance for everyday use.

If you tow regularly, cover fast motorway miles or simply want the stronger engine, the D350 is worth trying. We recommend driving both rather than choosing from the badge alone.

Towing

This is where the D250 earns its place. Peak torque arrives low and stays flat, which is exactly the characteristic that makes towing feel unhurried. Check the tow pack is fitted on any car you are considering — it is an option, not standard.

Servicing

Keep to the schedule, and pay attention to the diesel particulate filter if the vehicle does mostly short, cold journeys. That usage pattern is hard on any modern diesel. If your mileage is genuinely low and local, be honest with yourself about whether a diesel is the right choice at all.
