Defender Hard Top

The Hard Top is Land Rover’s factory commercial Defender: two or three front seats, no rear cabin seats, panelled rear sides and N1 commercial classification. It is the base for most of our Defender stock.

What makes it a Hard Top

Mechanically the Hard Top is the Defender you already know. The difference is behind the front seats: a full-height load partition, panelled rear sides in place of glass, and a flat, lined load bay in place of the rear bench.

That configuration is what earns it N1 commercial classification, and everything else — the VAT position, the tax treatment, the way HMRC sees it — follows from that.

Two or three front seats: what is a jump seat?

Defender Hard Tops are available with two or three seats across the front. On three-seat models, the compact centre “jump seat” gives you an extra place when needed and folds down into a useful armrest with cupholders when it is not in use.

It is a factory front-row seat, not a rear-seat conversion. If passenger capacity matters, tell us whether you need two or three front seats when you enquire.

90 or 110

The 90 Hard Top is the short-wheelbase version: more manoeuvrable, tighter load bay. The 110 is longer, with substantially more load length and volume. For most working buyers the 110 earns its extra cost; for anyone spending real time on narrow lanes, the 90 has genuine advantages.

The engine

Current Hard Top stock is available with the D250 or D350 3.0-litre straight-six mild-hybrid diesel. Both suit the Defender well; the D350 adds roughly 100 horsepower for buyers who want the stronger performance option.

Specification and factory options

Trim and option packs make a substantial difference to a Hard Top. Depending on model year and availability, look for S, X-Dynamic SE, X-Dynamic HSE and X specifications, alongside useful factory options such as the PRO Pack, Cold Climate Pack, Advanced Towing Pack, Off-Road Pack, Convenience Pack and air suspension.
