Defender Commercial running costs for a business
What a commercial Defender actually costs a business to run, beyond the headline price.

Purchase, after VAT
The number to work from is the ex-VAT price, if you can recover. A £65,000 + VAT vehicle costs a recovering business £65,000 and a non-recovering buyer £78,000. Everything downstream should be modelled on the right one of those.
Vehicle excise duty
Light commercials pay a flat rate — £360 — instead of CO2-banded car rates plus the expensive-car supplement that a £65,000 passenger vehicle would attract. Over five years that difference is substantial.
Benefit in kind
The flat van benefit charge for 2026/27 is £4,170, against which the employee pays tax at their marginal rate. Compare that with car BIK on a £65,000 diesel and the gap is large. This is often the single biggest driver of the decision.
Fuel
A 3.0 diesel in a heavy vehicle — expect high-20s to low-30s mpg in mixed use, less when towing or loaded. Wide-track conversions and larger wheels cost a little more again.
Insurance
Commercial policies for a vehicle at this value are not cheap, and conversions must be declared. Get quotes before you commit — premiums vary widely between insurers on converted vehicles specifically.
Servicing and tyres
Main-dealer servicing is priced as a premium vehicle. Tyres are large, and wide-track cars often run wider or larger sizes again. Budget accordingly rather than by comparison with a normal van.
Depreciation
The real cost of ownership on most vehicles, and where commercial Defenders behave well. VAT-qualifying stock sells readily to the same business buyers who bought new, and demand for Hard Tops has been consistently strong.
A converted car is a slightly narrower market at resale — the conversion appeals to some buyers and not others — but good ones sell.
The summary
For a VAT-registered business genuinely using it commercially, a Defender Hard Top is far cheaper to run than its list price implies. For anyone else, it is an expensive vehicle with fewer seats.
