Defender Commercial vs standard: which should you buy?

Reviewed by the Castle Motors team · Updated 28 August 2026

Same vehicle, two very different propositions. Which one you should buy depends almost entirely on your VAT status.

The physical differences

Engine, gearbox, chassis, suspension, four-wheel drive and interior are otherwise the vehicle you know.

The case for the commercial

Entirely financial, and substantial if it applies to you: VAT recovery, flat-rate BIK, flat VED, and capital allowance treatment as plant rather than as a car. For a VAT-registered business genuinely using the vehicle for work, the gap runs to many thousands.

The load bay is also more useful than folded rear seats if you actually carry things.

The case for the standard car

It carries people, has rear windows, and is a nicer vehicle to own privately. If you cannot recover VAT, you are paying commercial-vehicle money for a less versatile car.

The jump seat question

A single fold-down rear seat is available and genuinely useful. It may also affect how the vehicle is treated for VAT — guidance suggests rear seating can push a Hard Top into being treated as a car.

So the honest framing is that the jump seat is not a small trim option; it is a specification decision worth checking against your own tax position first. Plenty of buyers take it knowingly. Just take it knowingly.

Resale

Commercial Defenders sell readily to the same buyer type that bought them new — VAT-registered businesses who value the same treatment. “VAT qualifying” in a used listing is worth real money.

Standard Defenders have a broader buyer pool. Neither is hard to sell.

How to decide, in one question

Are you VAT-registered and will the vehicle genuinely be used for business? If yes, the commercial is very likely right. If no, buy the standard car — the commercial’s advantages are not advantages to you.
