Defender Hard Top load space: 90 vs 110 in litres
The numbers that actually decide whether the 90 or the 110 is the right vehicle.

That is roughly a 50% increase, and it comes almost entirely from length rather than height or width.
Why length is the number that matters
Volume figures are calculated by filling the space, which flatters short load bays. In practice you are not pouring your load in — you are sliding in something with a fixed length.
Timber, ladders, pipe, rolled carpet, fencing, surveying kit: all length-constrained. If the thing you carry weekly does not fit the 90’s bay, no amount of cubic capacity helps, and the decision is made for you.
The full-height bulkhead
Both have one, and it is what makes the Hard Top a genuine commercial rather than an SUV with the seats out. It means the load cannot come forward into the cabin under braking, and it is part of what earns the N1 classification.
It also means you cannot carry anything longer than the bay by folding a seat, which is possible in a standard Defender. Worth knowing before you assume the commercial is strictly more practical.
Access
The side-hinged rear door is excellent at a loading bay and awkward in a tight car park — it needs room to swing. Anyone coming from a tailgate-equipped van notices this in the first week.
The load bay is lined as standard, which protects the vehicle and slightly reduces usable width.
Don’t forget payload

The practical test
Measure the longest and heaviest things you carry in a typical week. Take both numbers to the vehicle rather than to the brochure. If you are near either limit on a 90, buy the 110 — it is a much cheaper decision to make now than after purchase.
